About island Lastovo.

This green island, that looks like a large emerald dipped into the blue Adriatic open sea, represents a silent companion of history, a place that has managed to avoid all the turbulent changes of the modern civilisation.

However, life flourishes on Lastovo even from ancient pre-Hellenic times. What used to be the Illyric Ladesta, the Greek tribe Dorians have renamed to Ladestanos; the Romans have given it the name of Augusta Insula while from the middle of the 10th century this island is known under the Croatian name Lastovo. This prooves that the present inhabitants have dominated this island fore more than a thousand years. Lastovo and its archipelagos is perfect for those who seek a pure, intact nature in its most splendid form.

The Lastovo archipelagos is surrounded with 46 islets and reefs it is situated on the south of the city of Split ad 60 nautical miles away from the Italian cape Gargano. This area is rich with fish which, of course, results with a rich gastronomical offer as well. The one thing that can not be described and that can only be tasted is definitely the Lastovo wine, a subject of desire even of the Roman emperors.
Number 46 has a special meaning for Lastovo. Why? Because there are 46 uninhabited islets around the island, there are 46 small churches (chapels) on it, 46 hills and 46 plains covered with cultivated fields where olives, fruit and wine grape are being grown.
Placed away from the shore, in the open sea and having numerous beautiful lagoons, Lastovo is very attractive to yachtsmen and divers, who have a lot to see and explore in the underwater of the island and the nearby islets. This area is rich with fish, mussels and crustacean/crabs, while the lobster is one of the favourite specialties of the local restaurants and taverns.

A vacation on Lastovo is a combination of peace and quiet, of crystal clear blue sea and an intact nature, far away from the industrial civilization and surrounded with traditional mediterranean architecture. Tourism started to develop recently, after the proclamation of independence of the Croatian Republic in 1991. The Yugoslav military regime has never allowed any access to foreigners here. Lastovo, along with the island of Vis has been a forbidden fruit for foreign tourists.
